Orhan Çekiç konuşmasına “Atatürk hepimizin Atatürk’ü. Cumhuriyet hepimizin Cumhuriyeti. Tüm medeni içeriğini, niteliğini, getirdiklerini, Atatürk’ün bizler için yaptıklarını hepimiz biliyoruz. Olup bitenlerin hazmedilir tarafı yok. Hepimiz onu tanıyoruz da ne kadarını tanıyoruz; Dünya onu tanıyor, o tanınan Atatürk devrimlere başladığında en önemli devrimine adım atmak üzereyken bir suikast düzenlendi. Harf devrimi öncesi yapılan bir suikast girişimi. Bütün komutan arkadaşları bu işin içindeydi. Alıp veremedikleri neydi? Dünya’nın hayran olduğu, tarihin kaydetmediği bu milli mücadeleyi örgütleyebilmiş bir devlet başkanının bu kadar yakın arkadaşı olup da artık tutamıyoruz mutlaka frenlememiz gerek denildiğinde daha neleri yapacağından korktular. Kadın Hakları. Hiçbir padişahımızın gerçekleştiremediğini o gerçekleştirdi. Ama işte o reformlar yapıldığı zaman bu gökyüzünün tepemize indirileceğine o kadar inanıyordu ki bu arkadaşları düşmanlıklarından falan değil. Ama Kemal’i bir yerde durdurmak lazım. Dolayısıyla bugün sizlere klasik Cumhuriyet tarihi anlatacak değilim. Otuz senedir Cumhuriyet tarihi anlatıyorum. Anlatılanlar Cumhuriyet tarihi değil, anlattığım her şey belgeseldir.” diyerek başladı ve daha sonra Atatürk’ün Nutuk’u öldürülebileceğini bildiği için altı ayda nasıl yazdığına değindi.
Çekiç, UNESCO’nun aldığı karar ile Atatürk’ün bir devlet adamı, büyük bir devrimci, büyük bir barış adamı ilan edildiğini ve dünyada nasıl anıldığını anlattı. Sözlerine “Atatürk sadece bir Türk değildir, Avrupa’nın kurtarıcısıdır. Uluslararası sorunların çözülmesi için UNESCO’dan çok emek vermiş bir devlet başkanıdır. Yokluklar içerisinde yok edilmiş bir imparatorluğun külleri içerisinden laik, sosyal bir hukuk devleti niteliğinde bir cumhuriyeti bize rağmen kurmuş bir devlet adamıdır ” diyerek devam etti.
Çekiç Atatürk’ün ölmeden önce bile verdiği sözleri tutmak için ayakta nasıl durduğuna, hastalığını kimseye hissettirmediğine değinirken, hepimizin vatanını sevdiğini ama hiçbirimizin Atatürk’ün vatanını sevdiği kadar sevemeyeceğini söyledi. Atatürk’ün ölmeden önce bizler için kaleme aldığı “Beni Hatırlayınız” adlı yazısında gençlere seslendiğini ve onların gelecekte çok iyi yerlere geleceklerine dair inancının altını çizdi. Ancak Nutuk’ta yer alan bu yazıya ölümü hatırlattığı için karşı çıkan Atatürk’ün genel sekreterini dikkate alarak yazısının üstünü çizdiğini söyledi.
